John William Fries (b. 1846), the son of Francis and Lisetta Maria Vogler Fries of Winston-Salem, NC, was a student at the University and a member of the Dialectic Society during the 1866-67 academic year but left before earning a degree. In 1869 he married Agnes DeSchweinitz. He became a manufacturer and eventually was president of Peoples National Bank in Winston-Salem.
